Valentine’s Day took an unexpected turn as a 40-year-old man from Gweru was arrested for allegedly stealing a taxi in an attempt to impress his girlfriend.

According to Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, Midlands Provincial police spokesperson, Mabiginye approached Nigel Gombakomba, a pirate taxi driver, in the bustling Gweru CBD. He hired the taxi under the pretext of visiting his girlfriend to deliver a Valentine’s Day gift.

Inspector Mahoko stated that during the journey, Mabiginye requested to take the wheel as he was eager to showcase his driving skills and make a lasting impression on his significant other.

As they reached Lundi Park Shops, the suspect handed the taxi driver US$10, asking him to purchase drinks. Seizing the opportunity, Mabiginye swiftly accelerated the stolen vehicle, leavinG the taxi driver behind.

The Chase Begins
Undeterred, Gombakomba sought assistance from a fellow motorist and initiated a pursuit of the fleeing taxi. Their determination paid off as they managed to locate Mabiginye at a nearby fuel station, where he was in the process of refueling the stolen car.

Apprehension and Handover
With the aid of garage security personnel, Mabiginye was successfully blocked and detained. He was subsequently arrested before being handed over to the authorities.
