Neville Mutsvangwa to spend more nights in remand prison
HARARE — Neville Mutsvangwa held on currency trading charges since May 8 will languish in remand prison a few more days after the High Court postponed ruling on his bail bid to May 27.
Justice Esther Muremba told the court, she is yet to receive typed record of proceedings from the lower court where Mutsvangwa was denied bail, pointing to delays in availing the record by the National Prosecuting Authority.
Mutsvangwa faces charges related to illegal foreign currency dealings and possession of an unlicensed Starlink router. Alongside his two accomplices, he was denied bail by Harare magistrate Denis Mangosi last week and remanded in custody until May 30. The State argued against bail, insisting on the seriousness of the charges.
However, Mutsvangwa appealed the decision and brought the matter before the High Court through his legal counsel, Josphine Sande. Justice Esther Muremba heard the appeal last week and had reserved judgment until today.
According to the State, during the investigation, police encountered resistance when attempting to enter Mutsvangwa’s Mt Pleasant residence. After cutting the electric fence and climbing over the gate, they eventually found him hiding between a precast wall and a pile of waste sacks.
In a separate operation, detectives visited Mumba Money Transfer Office in the city center, where they apprehended a Majachani serving clients. The police seized US$3,890 in cash, computers, a transaction register, and over 20 Visa cards.
