Opinion: High profile corruption arrests blow hot and cold

Since the beginning of the year we have witnessed high profile individuals being implicated and arrested for different corruption cases.

These arrests reinforce President Emmerson Mnangagwa ‘s commitment to fight corruption, but the low conviction rate is worrisome.

Too many sacred cows and systematic link between these individuals and top cops.

Zimbabwe Miners Federation boss Henrieta Rushwaya’s arrest for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold to Dubai is a microcosm of the macrocosm.

It is an open secret that she is ‘married’ to the prosecutor general and this naturally compromises the smooth flow of the wheels of Justice.

Precedence has been set wherein she has survived prosecution on a slew of charges

Recently, CID boss Crispen Charumbira was arrested for shielding incarcerated gold dealer David Crosby whose partner was nabbed with 1.3kg of gold.

Caaz boss David Chawota was arrested in a high profile arrest but is walking scot free.

Zinara finance director Simon Taranhike was also arrested but was acquitted.

A lot of name dropping has also served as an impetus to the growth of corruption which has permeated the social strata.

The cancer of corruption is far from over in this rent seeking economy. The Fourth Estate is not spared, some of my kind have been entangled.
