At least 118 students have so far been relocated from war-torn Ukraine to safer places, Cabinet has said.
Addressing media after Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, Information minister Monica Mutsvagwa said Government is taking all necessary steps “to evacuate students and other nationals from Ukraine following the outbreak of war with Russia.”
The country’s Missions to Moscow and Berlin are facilitating the evacuation mission.
“To date, a total of 118 students have relocated to the following safer places: Romania, 28; Hungary, 15; Slovakia, 26 and Poland, 49,” Mutsvangwa said.
Government is in the process of buying tickets for the students to come back home, she continued.
There is a Mission Official who is currently based in Poland to assist those that need to be repatriated.
“You will continue to be updated on the situation of students in Ukraine,” Mutsvangwa said.
Africans studying in Ukraine are desperately trying to leave the country with some saying discrimination is hindering their escape.
“There is a lot of discrimination going on there,” Joseph, a computer engineering student told DW.
“We actually had to beg people to take us to the border so we could find a way to escape.”
Various agencies have reported that a number of Africans trying to flee Ukraine after Russia invaded last Thursday say they have had problems getting buses or trains to Ukraine’s borders because they were black.
