Mwonzora recalls Chitungwiza Mayor

Chitungwiza Mayor Lovemore Maiko has become the latest Councillor to be chopped by the Douglas Mwonzora led MDC-T.

The Chitungwiza ward seven councillor was removed from office over political differences.

Local Government minister July Moyo declared his post vacant on Tuesday, in a letter to Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

Moyo informed ZEC that he had been been notified by MDC-T that Maiko had been expelled.

Maiko’s departure follows that of Nelson Chamisa aligned Musa Mukweza who occupied the Chitungwiza deputy mayor post.

Mukweza was replaced by Kiven Mutimbanyoka

Mutimbanyoka was sworn in as deputy mayor of Chitungwiza in October 2021, taking over fro Mukweza who was recalled by the MDC Alliance.

He rose to the deputy mayorship post after being appointed by Local Government and Public Works minister July Moyo who said the council had failed or neglected to appoint a deputy mayor in terms of Section 104 of the Urban Councils Act.

The Chamisa led Citizens Coalition for Change accuse Mwonzora of using the power of recall to aid Zanu PF’s grip on local governments across the country.
