Zimbabwean properties looted in Sudan war

Some of the fighting forces in Sudan have taken advantage of the ongoing armed conflict to loot and destroy the properties of Zimbabwe and other countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade said on Tuesday.

The Ministry’s spokesperson, Mr Livit Mugejo said the properties were targeted after Zimbabwe evacuated its embassy staff and diplomats in April due to the escalating violence between Sudan’s regular army and a paramilitary force.

“This is an unfortunate incident which is currently happening in Sudan. It’s sheer criminality, to take advantage of the war to loot properties of our diplomats and the property of our embassy there. It’s not only Zimbabwe (whose properties have been destroyed) but we have heard that most of the other countries have been targeted,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Sudan’s warring sides, the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), agreed to a new 72-hour ceasefire from Sunday (June 18), as fighting intensified with deadly air strikes in the capital city of Khartoum and an exodus of wounded from Darfur over the border into Chad. According to a statement from Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry, “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America announce the agreement of representatives of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a ceasefire throughout Sudan for a period of 72 hours.”
