Zaka Jerera Uncle Sentenced to 60 Years in Prison for Molesting his Grade 7 Niece

A 30-year-old uncle, who is also a serial rapist from Zaka Jerera, has been sentenced to 60 years in jail for molesting his grade 7 niece. The man, who cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity, appeared before the Chiredzi Magistrate Courts, facing 4 counts of rape.

Horrific Abuse of Niece

On an unknown day in April 2021, the uncle saw his niece going into the nearby bush to fetch firewood and followed her. Upon reaching her, he knocked down the bundle of firewood she was carrying, tripped her down, and produced an Okapi knife before raping her. After finishing, he threatened to kill her if she told anyone.

Repeated Abuse of Niece

Two months later, the girl’s grandmother went away, leaving her in the hands of her uncle. As the girl was sweeping the house, the uncle seized the opportunity and pushed her onto a mattress before molesting her. The following month, the uncle molested his niece twice when the grandmother was away. The grandmother, in a bid to protect her son, concealed the matter both times.

Victim Speaks Out

In August 2023, the girl’s mother returned home from Harare, where she was working, and the daughter revealed what was happening in her absence. She immediately went to the nearest police station and filed a report.

Another Victim

The following month, the man is alleged to have molested another 42-year-old victim on her way back from the borehole. She noticed the man, who had a habit of following her, and tried to run away, but was caught. He grabbed her from behind, produced an Okapi knife. He then ordered her to choose between life and death before molesting her.

Harsh Sentence

The uncle was sentenced to 15 years behind bars on each count, of which 30 years were suspended. “The accused person was sentenced to 15 years on each count, of which 30 years were suspended. He will serve 30 years effectively,” stated the NPAZ press statement.
