HARARE – Zimbabwean police have urged schools to boost their security after a series of armed robberies targeting cash collected from parents paying fees.
Police spokesman Paul Nyathi said on Wednesday that two schools in Bulawayo and Chinhoyi were raided by robbers this week, who stole thousands of U.S. dollars from safes and also took vehicles, cellphones and laptops.
Nyathi said the robbers seemed to have inside information from staff or people linked to the schools, and warned that anyone who assisted the criminals would be arrested.
He said the police were working to track down the robbery syndicates and urged schools to avoid keeping large sums of money on their premises, and instead deposit them at banks, hire reliable security guards and install CCTV cameras.
