Outrageous Overcharging: Electronic Gadget Dealer Lands in Court for HP Laptop and Samsung Phone Scam

Shepherd Gonda aged 39, an electronic gadget dealer appeared in court yesterday for defrauding a client by overcharging a HP laptop and a Samsung phone.

It is alleged that Gonda was evading the law since last year. Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi presided over the case, remanding Gonda in custody until his bail ruling today.

Deceptive Transaction Unveiled

According to court proceedings, the incident occurred on April 11 last year when the complainant sought to purchase a laptop and cellphone for her child. In her pursuit, she contacted Gonda inquiring about a Samsung S21 Ultra and an HP Envy. Gonda quoted a price of US$1,740 for the laptop.

Allegedly, Gonda instructed the complainant to hand the money to his younger brother, who would then deliver the items. Consequently, the items were delivered to the complainant’s office and received by Shamiso Masango, who made full payment.

Unwanted Surprises and Elusive Refunds

However, the complainant soon discovered that the delivered items did not match her order. She immediately contacted Gonda, who assured her that he would rectify the mistake. Despite numerous attempts to obtain a refund from Gonda, he continuously evaded her.

Facing the Consequences

After months of evasion, Shepherd Gonda was finally apprehended on Monday, leading to his appearance in court. During the hearing, Gonda did not enter a plea. The court remanded him in custody pending his bail ruling, set to take place today.
