HARARE City Council (HCC ) is set to partner with a Chinese company, Yaowei Investments to develop a solar components manufacturing plant to reduce electricity shortages.
Zimbabwe has been facing massive power shortages and the innovation would bring an alternative source of energy to citizens as well as provide relief to Council facilities and enhance service delivery.
According to recent minutes of the Business Committee, the Yaowei’s production plant would involve importation of original parts and accessories which would be assembled in Zimbabwe and the main products would be invertors, lithium batteries, lighting lamps, and street lights among other products.
“Recycling of used batteries, lead acid batteries, plastics and lead, waste circuit boards, disposal of used electrical appliances and recycling of precious metals for export market. This would be done in an environmental friendly manner.”
“The Solar Power Generation Project would include the designing of corresponding power supply unit according to the size of the community with the view to supply electricity and recover costs,” read the minutes.
HCC’s Director of Works, Isiah Chawatama has appreciated the innovation.
The Committee tasked Town Clerk, Hosiah Chisango to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the company to ensure in-depth due diligence for an effective and productive partnership.
Yaowei investments specialises in the manufacturing of LED Solar Products and the investment scale of the project would be five hundred units of three hundred and twenty-watts power-plant photovoltaic panels per day.
The project would supply both the domestic and international market.
