Doctors receive ZWL10k as festive season allowances

  • Allowances meant only for those who applied for the scheme

HIGHLIFE Foundation, an Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) founded by Strive and Tsitsi Masiyiwa has stood by its promise to contribute towards doctors’ salaries as move towards ending the impasse between government and the juniour doctors.

The NGO offered to pay an extra monthly amount of ZWL$5 000, a smartphone, transport allowances and some medical equipment.

Zim Morning Post understands that doctors who applied for this scheme received their dues early this week.

A doctor who spoke on condition of anonymity told this publication that doctors who worked during the festive season also received allowances for the work rendered.

Doctors who applied for the scheme received their dues this week, while those who worked during the festive season received at least ZWL10 000.

Those who did not work during the festive season received still got theirZWL5 000,” revealed one doctor.

Progressive Doctors Association of Zimbabwe spokesperson Anesu Rangwani confirmed the development, saying they appreciated what Higher Life did in honouring their contractual obligation with the doctors.

“I can confirm that Higher Life met their contractual monthly allowances which covered the festive season and December allowances,” Rangwani said.

Doctors downed tools on September 3, 2019, demanding that their salaries be pegged at prevailing interbank rates.

As a consequence of the strike action, medical students from the University of Zimbabwe failed to write their examinations in November after it was discovered they had not learnt anything at the different hospitals where they are on attachment across the country.
