The Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) has suspended its president Losson Mtongwiza and the Zimbabwe Women’s Rugby Chairperson Regina Mwanandiwa following growing concerns over governance and financial mismanagement.
The move comes just weeks after a leaked recording surfaced in which Mtongwiza was heard telling players: “If you are here to be paid, don’t come again! We’re not here to pay people. If we don’t have money, we don’t owe you anything!” His remarks sparked widespread backlash amid reports that players were not paid after recent international matches.
In a statement released on Thursday, the ZRU National Executive Board said the suspensions followed recommendations from the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) and resolutions made during an Extraordinary General Meeting held on May 6.
“The NEB has resolved to temporarily suspend ZRU President Mr. Losson Mtongwiza and Zimbabwe Women’s Rugby Chairperson Ms. Regina Mwanandiwa pending further inquiry,” read the statement, which emphasized that the action was part of standard procedure when allegations arise.
The two officials are barred from carrying out any rugby-related duties or representing the Union during the period of suspension. The ZRU stressed that the inquiry would be conducted in line with its constitution to ensure fairness and transparency.
Vice President Dr. Tapfuma Parirenyatwa has been appointed acting president of the Union, while Thembelani Ncube remains in his role as vice president. The Zimbabwe Women’s Rugby Board is expected to name a stand-in chairperson in due course.
The Union urged the public and media to refrain from sensational reporting, warning that “clickbait or sensationalist reporting has the potential to seriously damage and tarnish the reputation of the sport of rugby.”
The ZRU reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and maintaining stakeholder trust as it navigates what it described as a “challenging period.”
