We have our party back, celebrates Mwonzora
The Douglas Mwonzora led MDC-T says the party is now beyond the claws of “false” democrats in an apparent jibe at Thokozani Khupe and Nelson Chamisa.
Khupe last week declared a break away from Mwonzora’s formation after months of intercine fighting for control of the MDC-T.
Matters came to a head last week when Mwonzora announced Khupe’s suspension on allegations of bringing the party into disrepute.
At the same time, Chamisa gave up on the fight to use the iconic MDC name and its assets when he announced he will now lead a new party called Citizens Coalition for Change.
Mwonzora appeared to celebrate the recent events declaring “at last we have won our party back.”
“This will give us a great opportunity to redress the ideological confusion, lawlessness and anarchy that had become an albatross on our great movement,” Mwonzora said in an internal memo to party structures.
“What has happened is clear poetic justice to our movement and we are sure our forebears are happy wherever they are. The party is now beyond the claws of those people who yesterday were oppressing us but were now masquerading as democrats. Our party stands for rights and interests of the people and not of a few leaders.”
“The next coming weeks should see us focus on the by-elections. Our campaign will be issue based, peaceful, respectful and tolerant. We are not interested in, nor shall we be involved in, violence and name calling. We call upon all our members to display superior emotional intelligence and focus,” he continued.
Mwonzora admitted that the past three years his party has endured ridicule, embarrassment and social media bullying.
“Despite all that we are happy that you have remained commendably focused on the values and objectives for which this great movement was formed. This great focus has led to the spectacular defeat of the undemocratic forces. They are now confounded and scattered,” Mwonzora said
“We started this year with a greater push towards national dialogue. This dialogue will see the lives of the Zimbabwean people change for the better. We have made sure that this dialogue will be focused on people issues and not on the interests of the leadership.”
The MDC-T is set to hold its Ordinary Congress March 5 with Mwonzora firmly in position to remain the party’s leader.
“This Congress is meant to consolidate and strengthen our internal democracy, unity and justice,” Mwonzora said.
“There were concerted efforts by some people working with external failed politicians to stop our congress. Their attempts to split the Party was unequivocally rejected by all the organs of our great movement. We are grateful to all our provinces led by Bulawayo province for rejecting anarchy and confusion and choosing the side of progress, order, unity and constitutionalism. Our party held its Extraordinary Congress on the 27th of December, 2020 and produced a clear result. This can not be circumvented by any internal or external machinations. The decision expressed by the majority is sacrosanct.”
The Mwonzora led political party’s popularity will be on the spot in March 26 by-elections.
The party said it had completed candidate selection process but certain processes were omitted ahead of today’s nomination court leaving aspiring contestants disgruntled.
“We implore those members adversely affected to bear with the leadership and focus on the common good,” Mwonzora said.
