Vendors Initiative for Socio-economic Transformation (Viset) on October 28 plans to hold a peaceful march against police brutality.
The march is in response to the recent arrest of vendors and the eventual death of a street vendor, Hilton Tafadzwa Tamangani, while in remand prison.
Viset spokesperson Samuel Wadzai said the association intend to hold a peaceful march against what they called police brutality.
“The deceased, Tamangani, was arrested and allegedly assaulted by the police on October 13, 2019 while going about his ordinary business,” Wadzai said.
“So severe was the assault and the prisons conditions that on October 19, 2019 we received the sad news of his passing on,” he said.
Viset on October 19 wrote a letter to the Officer Commanding Harare District, giving notice of a peaceful march against “police heavy handedness”.
“The peaceful march is also going to commemorate the life of Hilton Tafadzwa Tamangani,”Wadzai said.
The march is scheduled to start from corner Rezende Street and Jason Moyo before proceeding east along Rezende Street to Nelson Mandela Avenue.
During the march, Viset said it would submit a petition to the Clerk of Parliament and then proceed to Harare Central Police Station where there will also submit another petition.
“Also, other petition copies will be handed to the Home Affairs ministry and the Correctional Services Department by some Viset representatives,”Wadzai added.
