Supreme Court hope for Maxmore Njanji’s seized assets

HARARE – Former Cottco marketing and business development manager, Maxmore Njanji, has stepped up his efforts to appeal to the Supreme Court in a bid to stop the State from seizing his properties. This follows the High Court decision to deny his request to have the State return a number of vehicles and immovable assets taken from him.

The seizure of his assets was made after he was arrested alongside Gokwe-Nembudziya MP, Mayor Wadyajena, Cottco managing director Pious Manamike, Fortunate Molai and Pierpont Moncroix Mauritius director Chiedza Danha. High Court Judge Pisirayi Kwenda then granted an order instructing law enforcement officers to secure Njanji’s property at his companies Chita One Logistics and Square Family Trust.

Njanji filed an application for rescission of Kwenda’s ruling, which was struck off the roll by Justice Benjamin Chikowero. Chikowero argued that the decision to seize Njanji’s assets was lawfully reached and as such there was no need for him to complain. The judge further stated that while exercising jurisdiction, the High Court cannot review its own decisions in criminal matters.

Njanji had further complained that it was strange and illegal for the order of seizure to be granted in his absence. Now no longer under investigation for any offence, he will be making his case to the Supreme Court, with his lawyer expressing confidence in getting his assets back.
