MUTARE — The whole of last week, Mutare was abuzz with excitement as Premier Soccer League debutants Scottland, who have reignited interest in local football, were set to play Manica Diamonds in the city.
Anticipation grew on Friday as Scottland launched roadshows in Mutare, selling merchandise and announcing the arrival of the flamboyant team. By Saturday, the town was painted in Scottland colours, and it became clear that Sakubva Stadium would be packed.
According to Scottland FC, over 2,000 jerseys were sold over the weekend. By kickoff on Sunday, Sakubva Stadium was nearly full, and even at halftime, long queues snaked outside. Eventually, tickets ran out, and thousands of fans were turned away.
Club owner Pedzai “Scott” Sakupwanya must be a proud man. He has revived interest in local football at a time when traditional giants Dynamos and CAPS United have struggled to inspire.
Mutare City officials admitted they had underestimated the turnout and failed to open all stadium gates despite knowing Scottland’s growing influence on domestic football.
Sakupwanya, who hails from Manicaland, brought his team to familiar territory—and fans responded in kind. Supporters from across the province flocked to Mutare, turning the match into a home game for Scottland.
Speaking to the Manica Post, football administrator and CAPS United supporter Lloyd Chinawa conceded that the buzz surrounding the Manica Diamonds vs. Scottland match was unprecedented in Mutare.
“I think it is clear—and we must admit—that the match created so much pre-match hype. It’s something we used to witness with CAPS United, Dynamos, and Highlanders matches in the past. The tables seem to have turned. It remains to be seen whether this new allegiance will last, but if it does, it’s good for football,” he said.
A Manica Diamonds official said the match had delivered their biggest payday in years.
“This was something else. Normally, in Mutare, only Dynamos and CAPS United draw big crowds, but now Scottland has become the Premier League’s new paymasters—thanks to Honourable Sakupwanya,” said the official.
