Man granted bail after allegedly assaulting MP over suspected affair

HARARE — A Harare man who allegedly assaulted Masvingo South legislator Tanatsiwa Mukomberi and smashed the windscreen of his vehicle after accusing him of having an affair with his wife has been granted bail.

Wilson Mutambwani, 38, of Braeside, appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo on Friday facing charges of assault and malicious damage to property. He was released on US$200 bail.

The court heard the incident occurred on May 20 at Cresta Lodge in Harare, where Mutambwani had gone for a business meeting.

According to prosecutor Tafadzwa Jambawu, Mutambwani saw his wife Rejoice Govera’s vehicle parked in the hotel car park. A security guard reportedly told him she had left in a Ford Ranger Raptor. Suspecting infidelity, Mutambwani deflated the tyres on her Nissan Xtrail and waited.

Later that evening, Mukomberi arrived at the hotel driving the same Ford Ranger Raptor. As his wife prepared to disembark, Mutambwani allegedly confronted the MP, pointed a toy gun at him, and ordered him out of the vehicle.

He then allegedly assaulted the lawmaker with open hands and booted feet, before using a stone to smash the windscreen of the MP’s vehicle.

Mukomberi sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment. The case continues.
