Harare and Lilongwe have historical ties dating back to the colonial era.

In her speech, on Independence Day, Dr Saungweme urged Malawi and Zimbabwe to expediate signing of some bilateral relationships aimed at opening up trade between the two countries.

In response to her invitation, this week, eight Malawian companies are showcasing at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF).

In a statement Ambassador Saungweme said: “The Embassy takes this opportunity to inform that the Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC) informed of a Malawi delegation who are currently attending the 62ndZimbabwe International Trade Fair being held in Bulawayo from 26 to 30 April 2022.”

“The participation of the Malawi delegation composed of different companies is testimony to the increasing bilateral trade relations between Zimbabwe and Malawi.

“Such platforms for trade cooperation are encouraged by both our governments as we seek to fully implement the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA).”

In an interview with The Independent Digest Dr Saungweme said Harare and Lilongwe are sister nations that should be cooperating in a number of bilateral relations.

“There is nothing that should stop the two countries from cooperating on a number of bilateral relations.

“More than three million Malawians are domiciled in Zimbabwe. The intermarriages that have taken place over time also help to strengthen such ties.”

“Malawians feel at home in Zimbabwe while the same happens for Zimbabweans that have settled in Malawi,” she said.
