Livestock breeding breathes life into Uzumba

CROSS-BREEDING of livestock has brought a sigh of relief to the people of Uzumba – a drought prone district – as they are now able to rear goats for sale within and outside their immediate environs.

The people of Uzumba rear the Kalahari Red goats, renowned for giving at least 100 kilogrammes of meat compared to local goats which offer less than 25kg.

Memory Manyadze (32) said the project had empowered and given her economic independence as she could now single-handedly take care of her family.

“The project which was brought to us by CARITAS and CAFOD has empowered us as young women,” Manyadze said.

The Uzumba entrepreneur believes there is still more which needs to be done to improve the project and ensure more productivity.

“We still need paddocks to keep our goats and fence for the security of our goats,” she added.

District Development Co-ordinator Samuel Chindunduma applauded the projects which CARITAS and CAFORD were sponsoring in the district, arguing they had changed the livelihoods of many.

“We are pleased with what CARITAS Harare is doing in our district; so far it has improved livelihoods in our communities through its various projects,” Chindunduma said

CARITAS Zimbabwe field Officer Joyful Mujuru said the project had benefited families from the 12 wards in the past three years.

“On food security aspects, that is where we have dams, irrigation schemes, livestock breeding projects, fruit trees and promotion of micro-nutrient rich crops and related trainings,’’ Mujuru said.
