HARARE City Council (HCC) has reported Mupedzanhamo Market space barons to the Joint Operations Command (JOC) in a bid to depoliticise the affairs at the market.
In a statement released by the Director of Housing and Community Services on Friday, Addmore Nhekairo, the HCC said they had flagged space barons in Mupedzanhamo.
The council’s informal sector committee was informed of the decision by the Harare municipality to obtain peace orders in order to bar the concerned barons from interfering with activities at Mupedzanhamo market.
“The department flagged all space barons causing problems in all markets and reported them to JOC and was also considering getting peace orders from the courts to bar known barons from visiting the markets,” read the statement.
Some senior Zanu PF officials have allegedly taken over Mbare, collecting rentals and in the process prejudicing HCC of millions of dollars in potential revenue.
A militant gang, Chipangano, is reportedly at the forefront of the scandalous deals that have resulted in HCC losing control of areas such as Carter House (a boarding facility), Mbare Msika and the Mupedzanhamo market.
The gang was previously led by former youth leader Jim Kunaka , who later quit Zanu PF after causing a reign of terror.
