Hwange fault causes major setback to power supply

THE government’s efforts to improve electricity supply has suffered a major setback following the breaking down of  Hwange Unit 5 this Wednesday.

This development implies that consumers will have to face the challenges of Stage 2 load shedding.

Energy minister Fortune Chasi confirmed the development on his official micro blogging site Twitter account.

“Sadly Unit 5 at Hwange broke down yesterday late afternoon .

This causes us to revert to Stage 2.

“The inconvenience is obvious and regrettable,”  the Tweet read.

The country has been experiencing incessant power cuts due to the low water levels at Kariba dam.Meanwhile, the Hwange Unit 5 section was repaired last month adding 160 Meggawatts to the national grid.

This saw a massive improvement in power supply.

Government recently agreed on a payment plan with South Africa’s Eskom where it pays USD890 000 per week in concerted efforts to improve power supply in the country.
