RELEGATION-bound Hwange FC have sacked coach Nation Dube following a poor string of results which have left the coal miners’ Premier Soccer League (PSL) status hanging by a thread, Zim Morning Post can reveal.
Dube presided over his 12th defeat of the season after coming unstuck against a plucky Herentals on Sunday.
So poor has Hwange’s defense been this season that they have shipped in 36 goals in 31 matches.
The side is second from bottom with 33 points and even six points in their last two matches will not guarantee them a stay in the PSL.
On Sunday 48-year-old Innocent Benza ensured Hwange’s defensive frailties were given a commical dimension after he was one of the scorers in Herentals 3-2 win over Hwange.
Hwange administrator Khumbulani Ndlovu declined to comment on Dube’s sacking when reached for comment referring questions to club chairman Butholezwe Dube.
Dube could not be reached at the time of publishing.
However, well-placed sources told Zim Morning Post that goalkeepers’ coach Edmore ‘Mamkhwebu’ Sibanda and former defender Obert Moyo will be interim coaches for the last two matches of the season.
Last month Hwange sacked Brian Njobvu who was assistant coach to Dube alleging he was interfering with the head coach’s job with former players David Phiri and Francis Mwinga being appointed technical advisors.
In what has turned out to be his last interview as Hwange coach on Sunday Dube still believed his side could salvage victory from the jaws of defeat.
“I cannot say there is anything that went wrong besides defending which I can call a disaster. We still have to rectify mistakes and keep believing,” Dube said.
