HARARE City Council (HCC) on Monday said it had withdrawn its sponsorship of Premier Soccer League side Harare City FC.
In his State of the City address, Harare mayor Herbert Gomba confirmed that the ‘Sunshine Boys’, as the team is fondly referred to as, will from next season have to look for another sponsor.
“We are no longer going to continue sponsoring Harare City FC as we have other priorities,” Gomba said.
“For next season, I appeal to Harare City FC to look for sponsorship from elsewhere and not us.”
He said while it was important for council to promote the development of sport, it was also imperative that urgent priorities for the city be addressed, adding that the team needed to grow and be weaned off council budget.
HCC has sponsored the ‘Sunshine Boys’ since their promotion to the top-flight league in 2012. The sponsorship, however, was marred with controversy following revelations of serious overspending.
This has become a shocking move for the residents since most of them thought the football was gobbling a lot of money which have been supposed to be used for service delivery.
