HARARE City Council (HCC) has challenged its engineers to help solve water and sanitation-related problems affecting the city.
Speaking at the 10th Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers Biennial Congress at Monomotapa Hotel on Thursday, town clerk Hosiah Chisango said engineering plays a pivotal role in improving the lives of citizens.
“Engineering plays a key role in supporting the growth and development of a country’s economy as well as in improving the quality of life for its citizens.
“Zimbabwe is facing a myriad of challenges in the water and wastewater sector, the energy sector, in the roads and general decay of infrastructure because there has not been any meaningful investment in the past 30 years,” he said.
Chisango described the narrative of bad infrastructure as a symptom of the absence of timely maintenance and upgrading of infrastructure to match demand.
“These are key issues that the modern engineer must be seized with; that are catchment environmental planning, pollution prevention strategies, pollution modelling, and urban water systems management, new solutions for water treatment chemicals, use of technology to solve the challenges we are facing as a country,” Chisango said.
