An aspirant for the Zanu PF Chipinge South nomination who was disqualified on allegation of running an illegal brewery was detained on Monday on accusations of breaking Chapter 9:10 of the Harmful Liquids Act.
Robert Nyemudzo, who recently won the recently concluded Zanu PF primary elections, is accused of operating an unlawful business in Checheche.
He was barred by the Zanu PF Politburo on Monday from running for the party’s nomination. On Monday, Nyemudzo made an appearance before Chipinge judge Franklin Mkwananzi.
He entered a not guilty plea and was released from detention with the intention of continuing his trial on April 24.
According to the prosecutor, Mr. Thulani Zondwayo, Chisumbanje police were carrying out an investigation at Checheche with the codename “No to illicit alcohol products” when they got a tip that Nyemudzo was making the illegal brew at his house.
“The police officers approached the home and found people who were mixing ethanol blend with water. Some were packaging it in 200ml plastic bottle containers.
“The police officers advised them to stop their operations. The people at the house told the police officers that they were working for Nyemudzo,” he said.
“The police officers confiscated 20 860x200ml of the illicit brew and 2 380x200ml of empty plastic bottles containers, as well as 6×20-litre containers of ethanol and took them to the police station”.
