Cimas iGo Half-Marathon Draws Over 1,500 Runners to Support Prostate Cancer Awareness

HARARE — The Cimas iGo half-marathon drew over 1,500 runners on Sunday at ZB Sports Club, where Edson Nyadembera secured victory in the 21-kilometer race with a time of 1:17:56. His win came nearly two minutes ahead of second-place finisher Davison Madzivanyika, who completed the course in 1:19:47.

Watson Masendeke claimed first place in the 10-kilometer race with a time of 40:53, while Samuel Vutete followed closely at 40:55. Mthokozisi Ncube emerged as the winner of the 5-kilometer event, crossing the line at 24:01, with Tichaona Mupazviripo finishing second at 25:19.

This year’s marathon, themed “Men’s Health Champions Build Healthier Communities,” centered on raising awareness about men’s health issues, particularly prostate and testicular cancer. The event’s spotlight on prostate cancer comes as part of Cimas Health Group’s broader commitment to supporting men’s health and aligning with global Movember initiative.

Proceeds from the marathon will be donated to the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe as part of Cimas Health Group’s corporate social responsibility efforts. Last year’s Cimas iGo half marathon raised US$13,753, which was donated to the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe, showcasing a commitment to the fight against cancer, which remains one of the leading health challenges in Zimbabwe.

Speaking to journalists on the side-lines of the event, Mrs. Junior Mavu, general manager of the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe, highlighted the importance of Cimas’ continued support.

“I want to thank Cimas for this partnership, which greatly supports the Cancer Association,” she said. “The funds raised contribute to patient support, including purchasing chemotherapy drugs for those who cannot afford them, providing food hampers to improve treatment outcomes, and fueling home visits for counseling and follow-ups.”

The association also offers comprehensive counseling services, including one-on-one, family group, and tele-counseling, as well as support groups for patients navigating life after a cancer diagnosis.

Tatenda Madzikanda, Cimas Health Group’s chief marketing officer, expressed satisfaction with the event’s turnout and its impact. “We trust that we have played our role in raising awareness about men’s health issues, particularly prostate cancer,” Madzikanda said. “We look forward to the next leg of the marathon in Bulawayo on November 24 at Bulawayo Athletics Club.”

Earlier, Mr. Vuli Ndlovu, Chief Executive Officer of Cimas Health Group, underscored the importance of the marathon’s mission.

According to the Cancer Research Institution, prostate cancer is the second most common for men, only trailing skin cancer. The research institution notes that approximately 1.3 million men are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually, and one in seven men will be impacted by it in their lifetime.

“As Cimas Health Group we encourage all men to get screened for prostate cancer and take charge of their health through regular medical check-ups and professional support. I encourage citizens, government agencies, private businesses, nonprofit organisations, and other interested groups to join in activities that will increase awareness of what Zimbabweans can do to prevent and cure prostate cancer,” Mr Ndlovu noted.

“Traditionally, men have been reluctant to seek medical help or discuss health issues openly, fearing it might be seen as a sign of weakness. However, breaking this stigma in Movember is crucial, as open communication is essential for wellbeing,” he continued.

The marathon, designed to encourage both physical fitness and motivate men to take control of their health, is open to all members of the public, whether one is an avid runner, health enthusiast, or simply wish to support this noble cause.”

Registration for the Bulawayo event is available online through Cimas platforms, with a US$15 fee that includes a race pack containing a T-shirt, string bag, and medal.
