KAROI — Karoi Council Chairman Kudakwashe Chigumo, who initially expressed a willingness to engage with the media over the Karoi United vs. Scotland FC appeal, is now avoiding public scrutiny.
Chigumo’s shift from openness to silence became apparent after questions arose about the financial and procedural details behind the US$5,000 used to file the appeal, and whether a formal council resolution had authorized the move.
This reticence comes amid growing public concern and speculation regarding the transparency of Karoi’s administration, particularly after revelations that players are not receiving adequate care. The silence has fueled concerns about the management of public resources, prompting residents to demand clearer answers.
An insider highlighted the irony in Karoi’s financial situation, pointing out the team’s struggle to cover even basic match expenses, such as providing water for players. Yet, they somehow managed to find an astounding $5,000 for the appeal.
“We understand that it is prudent for Karoi to seek justice for fair play purposes, but we are also aware that the team has struggled with basics all season. They couldn’t afford water or proper uniforms, yet they somehow found $5,000 for an appeal that benefits no one but themselves. It’s absurd, and suggests outside financial backing. Unfortunately, the council won’t come clean about it, and refuses to explain to the public because they know something is amiss. It’s no surprise they are avoiding addressing the issue,” the insider said.
The hearing for the contentious Karoi United FC vs. Scotland FC case, initially scheduled for this week, has been postponed to November 19. The dispute arose when Karoi United, facing a ruling that held them accountable for a match abandonment, appealed the decision earlier this month. While some community members see the council’s intervention as crucial for the town’s interests, others question the motives behind the financial expenditure.
Rumors of external financial influence have further fueled the debate, with accusations that influential backers might be behind the council’s actions who have their own self-serving interests. These claims have intensified calls for Chigumo and the local authority to reveal the source of the funds and the decision-making process.
As public pressure mounts, Chigumo’s continued silence leaves the community anxious for transparency, with answers still beyond reach.
