Chinese mining firm fined for under-declaring workers to NSSA

Chinhoyi – Chinese-owned Jiangxi Risheng Private Limited has been fined for under-declaring its workforce to the National Social Security Authority (NSSA), prejudicing the state of nearly US$100,000 in unpaid contributions.

The company, which operates Detroop Mine in Chikuti, Mashonaland West, was convicted at Chinhoyi Magistrate Court after it was revealed that it had declared only 61 employees to NSSA while employing 273 workers.

Represented in court by Meng Quangyuan, the company pleaded guilty to contravening the NSSA Act [Chapter 17:04]. The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), acting on a tip-off, partnered with NSSA to investigate the matter.

Their probe uncovered that Jiangxi Risheng employed 190 permanent staff and 83 contract workers and had failed to remit mandatory contributions to the Pension and Other Benefits Scheme and the Accident Prevention and Workers Compensation Scheme.

The court fined the company US$200 and ordered it to settle the outstanding US$96,919.42 within 30 days.
