Businessman Chapfika dies at Munhumutapa building, minutes after presenting maize import proposal

PROMINENT businessman and Highdon Investments director Mcdonald Chapfika has died.

He died in unclear circumstances on Monday after a presentation with government officials at Munhumutapa Building.

Munhumutapa building houses President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s offices.

In an official memorandum released Tuesday, it was revealed that he had a meeting at Munhumutapa building after meeting a friend identified as John Kayira at a local restaurant.

“ At around 1530hrs, they drove to Munhumutapa Building using the informant’s vehicle a Mercedes Benz Blue TEC C220 white in colour.

“Upon arrival at Munhumutapa Building they were directed to the boardroom where there were other participants of the meeting. They were offered some food and the now deceased ate some chips and meat. At around 1630hrs the now deceased made his presentation to the Government officials who included some Ministers and Ministry of Finance officials. His presentation lasted for about 15 minutes and was based on the procurement of maize from outside the country for the Government,” read the memorandum.

It was further revealed that after making his presentation proposing to import maize, Chapfika and his friend of Tanzanian origin left the boardroom proceeding to their parked vehicle just outside the building.

According to the memorandum, as  they approached the main entrance, Chapfika complained of dizziness.

“His friend rushed to fetch the vehicle and when he came back he saw the now deceased lying on the ground facing upwards. There were some security details who were attending to him pouring some water on his body in an effort to resuscitate him,” it was noted.

Chapfika was a prominent businessman who also had interests in neighbouring Mozambique, and at the turn of the century, his company Highdon Investments was a major deal breaker.

His brother, David, is former Deputy Finance minister.
