Acute water shortages hit Harare

HARARE city council mayor Herbert Gomba this Tuesday said the city might run dry if the drought induced water crisis is not addressed.

Gomba said the council decommissioned Prince Edward water works after the Seke and Harava dams dried up leaving us with Lake Chivero as the only water source.

“We have since decommissioned Prince Edward water works after the drying up of Seke and Harava Dam,” Gomba said.

He said the water crisis needs to be taken as a matter of urgency as the one source we now rely on  Lake Chivero is just above 50%.

Gomba highlighted that the council is currently supplying 5million people with water of which their facilities pump around 350litres per day which is equivalent to 49% capacity.

“The population of Harare also continues to grow by day and at the moment we are looking at 5 million people which as City of Harare must supply water to.

“Our facilities are pumping around 350 mega litres per day and that is 49 % capacity.

He advised that there is need for immediate action as the current water source cannot supply such a big and still growing population of Harare.

“This is not enough for such a big population, we need to come up with immediate action to this crisis as soon as possible,” he said.
