HARARE — Zimbabwean social media influencer Theophilus Chigumira, popularly known as “Mai Clifford,” was fined US$200 after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol, with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit.
Chigumira, 30, appeared before Harare Magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai, where he admitted the charge of driving while under the influence of alcohol in contravention of Section 54(4) of the Road Traffic Act.
Prosecutor Charlotte Chikoore told the court that Chigumira was arrested on Saturday while driving a Mazda Atenza at the Newlands Roundabout along Emmerson Mnangagwa Road in Harare.
A breathalyser test showed he had a blood alcohol concentration of 160 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood, well above the legal limit.
In mitigation, Chigumira asked for leniency, telling the court that his only assets were two cows valued at US$300 each and US$150 in savings.
The court fined him US$200.
