Zimbabwe’s top sports journalists celebrated at SWAZ awards

HARARE – The Sports Writers Association of Zimbabwe (SWAZ) held its annual awards ceremony in Harare last week, honoring four outstanding journalists for their excellence in sports reporting. The prestigious event recognized the best of the best in the industry, highlighting their achievements and contributions to Zimbabwean sports coverage.

Among the awardees was Veronica Gwaze, who bagged the 2022 Female Sports Writer of the Year award. Gwaze impressed the judges with her captivating article, titled “Gems Star Living the Dream . . . home turned into monument,” which chronicled the inspiring journey of Zimbabwe’s senior netball team captain, Felisitus Kwangwa.

Gwaze was rewarded with a certificate of excellence, a special gift, and a cash prize, for her remarkable work in sports journalism.

She was joined by other distinguished winners, such as Munyaradzi Madzokere from NewsDay, who won the 2022 Sports Reporter of the Year award, Tatenda Gondo, a talented multimedia journalist, who earned the 2022 Multimedia Journalist of the Year award for her work in the online media startup sector, and Liberty Mugari, a skilled freelance photojournalist, who received the 2022 Photojournalist of the Year award.

SWAZ chairperson, Faray Machamire, praised the winners phenomenal achievement and lauded their winning pieces for their captivating storytelling.

“The SWAZ awards ceremony highlight the talent, commitment, and passion of these exceptional sports journalists, reaffirming their vital role in enhancing Zimbabwean sports coverage. Their outstanding work sets a benchmark for the industry and motivates others to pursue excellence in sports journalism,” Machamire said.

“As these journalists continue to break new ground and provide insightful coverage, their work will undoubtedly influence the future of sports reporting in Zimbabwe. Their stories not only inform and entertain, but also showcase the successes and struggles faced by athletes, bringing the nation’s sporting achievements to the attention of the public.”
