Zanu PF said on Thursday MDC president Nelson Chamisa’s vow to defy police orders banning the MDC gatherings and planned protests is a slap in the face of the law.
On Tuesday, Chamisa wrote on his microblogging site Twitter that “enough is enough,” adding they had exhausted all channels required at law to stage protests.
“Enough is enough. We have exhausted all channels. We can’t continue to be victims of unjust application of the law. Rights are for all. On Tuesday 21st Jan we will deliver the people’s Agenda 2020 to the nation, come what may,” Chamisa wrote.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) recently banned an MDC rally at Mbuya Musodzi Hall in Mbare, where Chamisa intended to outline this year’s strategic plans dubbed Agenda 2020 to his supporters and the nation at large.
Speaking to Zim Morning Post, Zanu PF youth leader Pupurai Togarepi warned that if the Chamisa-led opposition provoked the police, authorities should not hesitate to take action.
“Chamisa should be warned that provoking the police should be met with equal measure, and the amateur in politics should be prepared to face the consequences,” Togarepi said.
He also said those who were planning violent demonstrations should be arrested as Zimbabwe is a peace-loving country.
“The law will not stand akimbo as other people are violating the Constitution. If Chamisa breaks the law, he should be arrested. We cannot continue treating him with kids’ gloves,” Togarepi said.
On January 14 last year, labour unions led protests in which 12 people were allegedly killed, with property worth millions of dollars destroyed.
The MDC has mooted demonstrations in protest of economic hardships in the country.
MDC is expected to give direction to their activities in the coming week.
