Technical fault derails e-passport issuance

HARARE – The issuance of civil registration and travel documents has been derailed by a technical fault, the Civil Registry Department confirmed on Sunday.

Insiders said the fault had been occasioned by breakdown of operation equipment.

However, Registrar-General (RG) Henry Machiri did not speak to the cause of the technical fault.

He insisted: “Our technicians are working tirelessly to rectify the situation and members of the public are urged remain calm and bear with us during this time.”

“Members of the public are also advised to disregard messages circulating on various social media platforms. Any information regarding this matter will be communicated by the Department through its formal channels,” Machiri said in a statement.

“We sincerely apologize for inconveniences caused by this development which we are working around the clock to address.”

The Civil Registry Department said in collaboration with the partner Garsu Pasaulis (GP) has made significant improvements in the issuance of electronic passports (e-passports) and since January 2022, a total of 140 000 passports have been issued.

The e-passport project has been cascaded to Bulawayo, Lupane, Chitungwiza, Murewa and Hwange.
