HARARE — Scottland Football Club’s hopes of Premier Soccer League promotion received a significant boost after they were awarded three points from their abandoned Northern Region Division One match against Karoi United, officials confirmed Wednesday.
The match, which took place last month, was called off with 10 minutes remaining when Karoi United supporters turned violent, attacking the referee, Scottland’s technical team, and players. Following the incident, the league awarded Scottland a 3-0 victory.
With the ruling, Scottland now sits just two points behind log leaders Mwos, with six matches left in the season. A Scottland official expressed optimism about their promotion chances.
“It’s game on,” the official said. “We will fight to make sure we get promotion and pray that our rivals slip up. We want to win our remaining six matches.”
The commissioner for the match, Kanzvimbo Kanzvimbo, highlighted in his report that Karoi United were responsible for the chaos, which forced the game’s abandonment.
“The home team, Karoi United, were already in their changing room when Scottland officials arrived. There were early tensions between officials of both teams, and it escalated to the point where I had to intervene with the help of police,” Kanzvimbo stated.
According to Kanzvimbo’s report, Karoi United supporters also pelted the referee, Dingo, with missiles after he cautioned their goalkeeper for time-wasting, causing him to collapse.
“The referees had to retreat to the changing rooms for safety after the crowd became increasingly hostile,” Kanzvimbo added. “I was even sprinkled with unknown substances as I tried to ensure the players’ safety.”
This decision mirrors a similar incident from last week when log leaders Mwos were also awarded three points after their match against Shamva was abandoned.
With six matches left in the season, Scottland’s path to promotion is far from clear, but their latest victory has injected new momentum into their campaign.
