HARARE – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a prohibition order banning the carrying of weapons in Harare ahead of planned demonstrations on March 31, amid rising tensions within ruling party Zanu PF factions.
Chief Superintendent M. Masvivi, the officer commanding police in Harare Central District, invoked Section 13 of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act (Chapter 11:23) to justify the ban, citing concerns over potential violence and public disorder. The order prohibits the carrying of weapons, including machetes, axes, swords, knives, catapults, and traditional weapons, from March 27 to May 31, 2025.
The police move comes as political tensions escalate in the capital, with factions within Zanu PF reportedly jostling for power. The planned demonstrations, set for March 31, are expected to draw significant participation from opposition activists and disgruntled citizens protesting against economic hardships and political instability.
According to the prohibition order, the ban covers a wide area of Harare, spanning Mbare, Braeside, Magaba Home Industry, Sally Mugabe Hospital, Marimba Suburb, Kirkman Road, Borrowdale Road, and Chikurubi Maximum Prison. Violators of the order face a fine of up to level five or imprisonment for six months.
Observers view the prohibition order as an attempt by authorities to suppress dissent and prevent potential clashes amid growing unrest within the ruling party.
