MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa has promised internal purgings in the party ahead of the crucial elective congress following a massive loss in the Cowdry Park ward election won by Zanu PF.
Posting his disappointment over the result on his microblogging Twitter handle Chamisa said “the results are a stark reminder of the urgent need for far reaching root and branch reforms.”
“We have had a serious invisible hand we have since discovered and about to cut it off,” wrote Chamisa.
MDC fielded two candidates and lost to the ruling party Zanu PF in the elections that were held last weekend amid preparation for a National Congress in May.
The two MDC candidates Nomagugu Mloyi and Collet Ndlovu got 1 229 and 221 votes respectively and lost to Kidwell Mujuru who garnered 1889. MDC Alliance had 8 514 votes in 2018 in the same ward.
Insiders said the double candidates are a manifestation of deep rooted factionalism that has rocked the party ahead of Congress.
“One candidate is behind the secretary general Douglas Mwonzora while the other is backing Chamisa ” said the source.
Presidential spokesperson Nkululeko Sibanda said
“Look, we blinked and the rigging machine took advantage. This is primarily because the President focused on the Cyclone and humanitarian situation. Be rest assured, President will look into this.”
