Mawarire case struck-off remand: To proceed by way of summons

HARARE magistrate Victoria Mashamba on Wednesday removed from remand democracy activist Evan Mawarire’s case in which he was to stand trial for allegedly undermining a constitutional government, including provocation to commit public violence.

Mawarire is accused of posting a series of online videos calling for boycotts in protest against the late former President Robert Mugabe’s government.

He is also facing charges of posting videos calling on Zimbabweans to boycott work and school, as well as an intention to “shut down Zimbabwe”.

The State said it still needed more time to go through the documents related to the case and make a decision on the way forward.

Mashamba removed the case from remand, ruling that the case had taken long.

The magistrate also ruled that the case would proceed by way of summons.

Mawarire is a Zimbabwean pastor and political activist.
