Lawyers’ demo against police brutality on today in Harare CBD

ZIMBABWEAN lawyers on Friday will demonstrate against alleged police brutality, injustices and incessant human rights abuses by members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

The lawyers said the march, to be held in Harare central business district (CBD), is meant to register their dissatisfaction with what they called “recurrent police brutality and harassment”.

Inside sources who spoke to Zim Morning Post said just like any other professions, lawyers have been affected by the ongoing police brutality while in the line of duty, forcing them to abandon their “quiet diplomacy” approach.

“We have been affected by the action of the police, and they are not making our work easier. We, therefore, need to register our discontent,” another lawyer said.

Recently, Douglas Coltart was allegedly beaten by yet to be identified police officers while on duty at Harare Central Police, suffering a fractured hand in the process.

Several lawyers more often complain of being denied access to their clients who would be in police custody.

Lawyers seem not to be the only victims of police brutality, as several journalists also allege having suffered the same fate.

Journalists at times complain to have been targeted while at work covering demonstrations, with many of their colleagues allegedly being victimised for merely carrying cameras.
