- MDC Alliance youths appear in court on allegations of violence
- Remanded in custody
MDC Alliance youths on Monday appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti on charges of inciting violence in the dormitory town.
The arrested include Youth Assembly spokesperson Stephen ‘Sarcozy’ Chuma, Elton Marimbe, Nyasha Mutsindikwa, Dambudzo Mhike, Tendayi Timuri, Jabulani Chatindiara, Chris Muretu, Terrence Manjengwa, John Molebaleng, Bruan Mushakwe, Tanyaradzwa Zawaira and Taurai Nyamanhindi.
The activists were arrested last week following violent clashes with anti-riot police in the dormitory town.
The dozen reportedly incited violence during a siege by alleged Zanu Pf supporters at Job Sikhala’s St Mary’s house.
MDC Alliance deputy national chairperson Sikhala disputed the arrest and said there was no basis.
“Can a person be arrested for being seated at someone’s house?
“The State outline says they were seated at my house.
“Is there any case like that in a democratic society?” Sikhala queried.
The accused’s legal counsel was made up of Moses Nkomo, Jeremiah Bhamu and Job Sikhala.
Presiding magistrate Muchuchuti submitted that the case constitutes a violation of human rights and should be investigated.
“This is a serious violation of the law, and the State must investigate and bring the findings on the next remand date without fail,” Muchuchuti said.
Chuma and others were remanded in custody to March 12.
