- Six arrested for drugs smuggling
- MCAZ says sale of unapproved drugs illegal
- Public warned against fake counterfeit medicine
THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in collaboration with Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) and Zimbabwe Revenue Authority on Monday intercepted a truck-load of unregistered medicinal drugs.
The truck was intercepted at Mikumbura Kanyemba Border Post for attempting to transport contraband allegedly destined for the illegal market in Zimbabwe.
“The sale of unapproved medicine is illegal,” MCAZ said.
The driver and his accomplices were all immediately arrested.
The ZRP are still investigating the case with view to prosecuting the culprits and bring them to justice.
Meanwhile, MCAZ has urged the public to be wary of counterfeit medicines circulating in the country.
The organisation has called for vigilance within the drugs supply-chain.
According to MCAZ, healthcare facilities such as hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, medical paraphernalia distributors and wholesalers should be closely regulated.
In a statement, the MCAZ advised the public to buy medical products from registered and reliable sources.
Licensing and enforcement division head, one T Rukwata issued a statement warning the public to be on the lookout for differences between the original and falsified medical products.
Rukwata said the public should consider checking inconsistencies in labels, containers and spellings in order to categorise the products.
MCAZ is responsible for protecting public and animal health by ensuring the safety and or accessibility of medicines and allied substances
