Police arrest three major drug dealers, seize over 50kg of crystal meth

HARARE – Zimbabwe Republic Police apprehended three major drug dealers, leading to the seizure of more than 50kg of crystal meth, commonly known as mutoriro, and 2kg of mbanje. The arrests were made under the ongoing operation: “No to dangerous drugs and illicit substances,” initiated due to reports of rampant drug abuse, especially among young individuals.

Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed the recent arrests and emphasized the police’s commitment to continue the fight against illegal drug peddling syndicates in the country.

The largest haul occurred on July 22 when detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics in Harare acted on information provided by an informant. They recovered 2,253kg of mbanje and 49.4kg of crystal meth, which were allegedly handed to the informant by an unidentified suspect in Beitbridge.

Additionally, on July 21, detectives arrested Tinashe Utete (24) at Tashinga Car Park, Zengeza 5, Chitungwiza, for the unlawful possession of 5.34 grammes of crystal meth worth $300,000.

In another related case, Precious Manyere (37) was apprehended on July 21 at a house along Dunmore Street, Queensdale, Harare, for illegal possession of one gramme of crystal meth valued at $70,000. The drugs were intended for delivery to a recipient in Bulawayo.

Finally, on July 23, 2023, detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics in Bulawayo arrested Mbonisi Mpofu (46) at Yonah Shopping Centre, Entumbane, for illegal possession of 3g of methacathinone worth $40,800.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi assured the public that criminals involved in drug trafficking and peddling would face arrest and encouraged citizens to continue reporting illicit drug activities to the police. The suspects remain in custody, awaiting trial for their alleged involvement in drug-related offenses.
