HARARE City Council (HCC) has moved forward participation by the HCC volleyball team in the Regional Zone 6 Championships set to be staged in Lilongwe, Malawi, this month.
Current economic challenges have had a negative impact on the city’s finances, hence HCC’s failure to avail the ZW$600 000 budget for the event.
In some recent minutes by the Finance and Development Committee, finance director Stanley Ndemera said Regional Zone 6 Championships for the volleyball team had been deferred.
“Due to economic challenges the council is facing, the volleyball team can no longer attend the tournament, because we cannot meet the budget for the event,” Ndemera said.
Meanwhile, Harare Mayor Herbert Gomba has already announced that council was going to stop funding Harare City FC as they began implementing austerity measures occassioned by the depressing economic environment.
“We are no longer going to continue sponsoring Harare City FC as we now have other priorities to take care of.
“For the next season, I appeal to Harare City FC to look for sponsorship from elsewhere, and not us,” Gomba said.
