Harare City Council employee nabbed in poaching syndicate

A HARARE City Council (HCC) employee is under investigation after he was caught aiding poachers to transport game meat in a council vehicle in Chivhu, Zim Morning Post can report.

The matter has been reported to Chivhu police, who have also since instituted investigations.

According to HCC’s acting chamber secretary, Charles Kandemiri, the employee (name not supplied) had a myriad of previous offences and council was acting accordingly.

He is alleged to have violated council provisions as he did not seek authorisation to drive the council vehicle (Reg No AAE 9117) beyond the 40km radius from Harare main post office.

“The employee’s son (employed by HCC) aldo allegedly used the vehicle to assist poachers in collecting game meat elsewhere in the  Chivhu area.

“Meanwhile, the employee had applied for a 10 months leave and had requested his son to ferry maize from their farm using HCC vehicle,” he said.

HCC reported that the poaching fiasco then turned into some kind of theatrical fiction after the vehicle was spotted by the National Parks and Wildlife authorities, resulting in its being impounded to while investigations were being carried out.

Kandemiri further submitted that the employee had been suspended from duty, pending disciplinary action.

This development has resulted in HCC authorities beng compelled to  review their transport policy in order to curb the further abuse of council assets.
