Gospel singer Mai Dhuterere charged with fraud, released on bail

HARARE — Gospel singer Dorcas Vambe, known as Mai Dhuterere, appeared in court Monday on charges of defrauding a Harare man of $16,000 in a vehicle scam, prosecutors said.

Vambe and her brother, Kudakwashe Vambe, who remains at large, allegedly claimed they could sell the complainant a Toyota Hilux GD6 and another vehicle within his budget. Prosecutors said they further claimed the vehicles could be imported duty-free under a presidential waiver for her service as a national performer.

The complainant handed over US$16,000 and received a signed affidavit committing to deliver the cars within two weeks, prosecutors said. Instead, Vambe allegedly provided a Ford Ranger registered in Botswana, which police later impounded for lacking a valid permit. She reportedly promised a second car, a Mercedes-Benz C200, but never delivered it.

Vambe was released on $100 bail. Her next court appearance is scheduled for later this month.
