HARARE City Council (HCC) recently approved sponsorship for the Harare Open Golf Tournament in order to boost council’s revenue.
The tournament will be held annually at the Chapman Golf Club every August at a total cost of US$20 000.
Council minutes show that the Information and Publicity committee has approved sponsorship for the annual golf tournament.
“Council approves sponsorship for the Harare Golf Tournament which will be held annually at a total cost to council of US$20 000,” read the statement.
Meanwhile, Harare mayor Herbert Gomba confirmed that HCC had withdrawn its sponsorship of Premier Soccer League side Harare City FC which is, from next season, expected to find another sponsor.
“We are no longer going to continue sponsoring Harare City FC as we have other priorities.
“For next season, I appeal to Harare City FC to look for sponsorship from elsewhere and not us,” Gomba said.
Town clerk Hosiah Chisango said HCC would consider looking at other opportunities that can be obtained from sporting and corporate communications as a way to increase council’s revenue.
HCC recently debated the matter and suggested that policy which regulates and promotes sporting disciplines be put in place, but taking into consideration first council’s financial position.
