CCC Strikes Back: Party Rejects Tshabangu Latest Recall Letter Targeting Harare Mayor

Zimbabwe’s main opposition party Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) rejects the latest recall letter, recalling the Harare Mayor and his deputy issued by self imposed party Secretary General Sengezo Tshabangu. Mayor Ian Makone, his deputy Kudzai Kadzombe and Denford Ngadziore are amongst the recent 9 legally elected CCC  members to be recalled.

Tshabangu’s Deceptive Tactics

It is alleged that CCC interim Secretary General is exploiting his connections to the ruling party to orchestrate a fraudulent process to recall CCC legally elected members. Sengezo is recalling them asserting that they have seized to be party members.

Recalled Councillors

In a letter dated November 7, 2023, addressed to Minister of Local Government, Public Works, and National Housing Winston Chitando, Sengezo listed the following recalled councillors:

  • Ian Makone (Ward 18)
  • Kudzai Kadzombe (Ward 41)
  • Denford Ngadziore (Ward 16)
  • Lovejoy Chitegu (Ward 36)
  • Samuel Gwenzi (Ward 5)
  • Chido Hamauswa (proportional representation)
  • Tiriboyi Sabina (proportional representation)
  • Florence Cheza (proportional representation)
  • Fadzai Matimba (proportional representation)

Continued Chaos and By-Elections

These recalls mark a new wave of disruptions following Sengezo’s earlier recall of 15 MPs, 17 councillors, and 9 senators. These actions, falsely claiming that the individuals had ceased to be CCC members, have forced by-elections scheduled for December 9, 2023.

CCC’s Rejection of Tshabangu’s Authority

The CCC has firmly rejected the legitimacy of Sengezo’s recalls. They have denounced them as fraudulent and disruptive to the party’s operations. The party maintains that Sengezo has no authority to issue such recalls and is merely attempting to sow chaos within the organization.
