Backlash at NAMA adjudicators for dance genre snub

THE adjudication process of this year’s edition of the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) has received a backlash for not having nominees in the dance and choreography genres.

THE adjudication process of this year’s edition of the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) has received a backlash for not having nominees in the dance and choreography genres.

The nominees were released Friday      by chairperson Ruby Magosvongwe and arts critics and players in the dance genre dismissed the nominees as a farce.

The adjudicators did not list any nominee in the Outstanding Dance group and Choreography categories amid revelations that they felt there was lack of creativity in the genres in question.

Interestingly, they had nominees in the outstanding male dancer category where Selemani ‘Majuice’ Mapochi is the favourite.

Dancers Association of Zimbabwe president Hapaguti Mapimhidze said he had reservations on the adjudication process and urged the National Arts Council to assemble a panel with arts aficionados and experts.

“Well, I do not want to say much now but clearly there is so much talent in the dance industry and so many talented dance groups bare coming up with new choreography concepts.

“Do the judges know about dance and its dynamics,” said Mapimhidze.

Internationally acclaimed choreographer and founder of High Definition dance outfit Tendai Guzha had no kind words for the judges’ panel.

“How do you submit your work when you are being disrespected every year?

“Right now if you ask the panel the basics of say hip-hop, they would not know.

“They do not know the dance culture; they are stuck in the dark ages when the world is progressing.

“The criterion used is also flawed; they must have sub-genres within the dance industry.

“For instance, some do choreography for music videos, weddings, theatre and so on.

“I have won an award in Europe through my concepts,” said Guzha who is famed for doing choreography for Jah Prayzah’s music video Tsamba.
