ZRP on high alert as MDC factions await High Court ruling

THE situation in Harare Central Business District (CBD) is a bit tense, with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said to be on high alert after some sections of the MDC Alliance youths are tipped to stage a demonstration Wednesday in the CBD.

MDC A president Nelson Chamisa

Speaking to this publication, a source within the ZRP said there were aware of some elements of MDC Alliance youths who are likely to stage a demonstration ahead of the court ruling today.

“A directive just came in yesterday night, ordering all police officers on and off duty to be on high alert after some intelligence tipped of a demonstration in the CBD,” said the source.

“We are aware of some elements pouring in from the capital’s high density suburbs into the CBD, with the intention to cause chaos hence today we have been ordered to be strict on everyone coming into town,” he added.

MDC-T Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora

Since morning, the police have been turning away people without proper documentation regardless of the lockdown conditions having been eased since the beginning of the week.

Unlike the previous week where vendors had flooded the streets, police officers have been deployed at every strategic position of the city, searching for weapons.

The panic by goverment appears to  have come after four  MDC Alliance legislators appealed the decision to recall them from parliament by a faction being led by Douglas Mwonzora, Morgan Komichi and Thokozani Khupe.
