Shake up in the army …as Mnangagwa re-assigns top soldiers

A major shake up has rocked the Zimbabwe National Army and saw the re-assignment of senior military officers.

President Mnangagwa announced Monday that he has re-assigned the senior officers to the diplomatic service in line with government ‘s global engagement and re-engagement strategy.

The officers will join the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International in a development that political analysts have viewed as demotions.

The officers are Major General Martin Chedondo, chief of staff Douglas Nyikayaramba, Anselem Sanyatwe and Shebba Shumbayawonda.

Nyikayaramba was last year summoned by Mnangagwa on the ceremony of renaming KG6 army barrack to Josiah Magama Tongogara and cautioned for sanctioning a plaque which had a wrong spelling of the country’s name Zimbabwe and was written ‘Zimbawe’.

The development gives credence to speculative reports that Mnangagwa is ‘cleansing’ the military after the August 31 killings that made world headlines and tainted the image of the army.
